Greek Goddess of the Earth

Gaia is known as the Earth or the spiritual embodiment of the earth, or the Goddess of the Earth, a Mother Goddess from which all other gods spring. Gaia is sometimes thought to embody the planets and the Earth, and sometimes thought to embody the entire universe.

Gaia was manifest in enclosed spaces: the house, the courtyard, the womb, the cave.
Her sacred animals are the serpent, the moon, bull, the pig, and bees.

Some wishing to be closer to Gaia and to Mother Earth release the need for material things to become more in tune with nature. Sometimes worshippers attempting to reach a greater connection to the Earth and Gaia use shamanistic practices, tithing, praising and praying, creating inspired works of art dedicated to the goddess, burning oils and incense, rearing plants and gardens, the creation and maintaining of Sacred Groves.

In Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth by James Lovelock, his hypothesis proposes that living organisms and inorganic material are part of a dynamic system that shapes the Earth's biosphere, and maintains the Earth as a fit environment for life. For some the Gaia theory proposes the Earth itself as an organism with self-regulatory functions providing all functions required for life.

The Romans believed every element in the universe, whether on land, in the sea or sky,
was a single living entity of Gaia, the primordial Great Mother. More than any other goddess, Gaia is identified as the divine and animate Earth Mother.

Gaia has respect for all life is and if we are to attain the deep sense of balance and completeness that a connection with Gaia brings we need to remember this. Gaia gives you grounding, balance and a sense of security within the unfolding of life. Ask for Gaia's presence when you feel out of balance with your life and those around you, so that she may bring you back into focus and in touch with yourself again.
